The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
